As loyal customers for many years, JJ and I have grown up shopping at BookDepository since so many books we needed both for our personal interest and studies were not available in our respective countries. We will definitely feel the loss of this incredible website which has been a great source of knowledge and entertainment for us over the years.
The Book Depository has made its mark in the world of literature since its inception in 2004 in the UK. With the acquisition by Amazon in 2011, it has only grown in popularity thanks to its extensive selection of books and free international shipping. What sets it apart from other book websites is the fact that it caters to a wide range of readers from different cultures and backgrounds through its selection of books in multiple languages.
Readers can connect with literary works from across the globe, making the reading experience all the more enriching. Whether you’re a bookworm looking for your next literary adventure or just starting your reading journey, The Book Depository has something for everyone.

For us, it evened the playing field by allowing us access to the same information as our peers and this played a huge role in our development but also in being able to access the required material for the series of exams interviews we have to go through to achieve our dreams of studying abroad. Most of all, it has done so at reasonable prices.
As book lovers, we are sorry to hear that The Book Depository will be closing on 26 April 2023. For the past 19 years, it has been a reliable source of books for readers all over the world. It is a sad day for us and for all book lovers worldwide.
Amazon has not given an official reason for the closure of The Book Depository, but it is speculated that it is due to their focus on their core business which also has an extensive book department. Additionally, the cost of shipping books to all corners of the world may have made their system less viable than before.
The closure of The Book Depository is a blow to us and all book lovers around the world. We hope that Amazon will find another way to make sure that books can still reach readers everywhere in the future while also being able to provide the same kind of value as before.
Yes, we know that many people can easily get books through Amazon and that their prices are usually incredible, but sadly not all countries have an Amazon store. Some of the main Amazon websites do deliver to many areas around the world, but the costs of shipping and then additional regualtions (for example in the EU not placing orders over 150 EUR to avoid additional custom taxes – on top of the VAT) make ordering very tricky and not worth it most of the times.
In conclusion, The Book Depository was an amazing website that enabled people from all around the world to get their hands on books without having to leave their comfort zone. It is a huge loss for book lovers and readers alike and we will certainly miss it very much. We hope Amazon can come up with a solution that fills the gap left by this closure so that readers of all kinds can access the books they need and want. It was refreshing to read a modern romantic comedy with an uplifting message and I’m sure you will enjoy it as well.
I absolutely adored the fact that my own experience living in London and witnessing day-to-day life, people, and their relationships (none of which were conducted with any ulterior motives, I assure you!) helped me gain a deeper understanding of several aspects that I was previously unfamiliar with. I guess this experience helped me relate or connect to the book in a way that I couldn’t do so despite being a bookworm all my life.
This brings me to another aspect of the book that I feel the need to mention – “Britishness”. The book is set in London as well as rural northern England and the author does an incredible job at ensuring that the setting comes across in an authentic way. While the characters and their relationships are the primary focus of this book, I found myself drawn to the beautiful nuances of British culture that were woven into the story.
I felt the need to bring this up even though it might be expected since the author is in fact British, but I found that it is not something one should take for granted. The author has done a wonderful job in creating an immersive experience for its readers and I believe that it is something worth mentioning, especially as it does not happen in every book no matter how much the author tries. At times, the setting can come across as fake but not in this book.
Now let’s talk a bit about spiciness as I am sure that is something of interest to many of you. Well, there are some spicy scenes in this book, but they are very few regardless of how it may seem at first. This is definitely a book dedicated to adult readers, but the book is rather clean.
Do I recommend this book?
Overall, this is a book I do recommend. Whether you’re looking for a lighthearted read or an emotional rollercoaster ride, Did You Miss Me? is sure to provide both. Never Twice is a lovely story about hope, family and not least love that deserves your attention.

#6 My only one
Kim Do-Ran (Uee) is a woman of great positivity and resilience, despite her financial struggles. She is studying for an exam to become a public official but her home life or lack thereof forces her to join a company in order to make ends meet. Think evil stepmother – Cinderella style.
While this change of plans turns out to be not as bad as it seemed initially, the appearance of her biological father, Kang Soo-Il (Choi Soo-Jong), after 28 years of estrangement throws Kim Do-Ran’s life into unexpected turmoil and putting Do-Ran’s newfound happiness in danger.

#7 Homemade Love Story
The drama series follows the lives of those who inhabit Samgwang Villa while focusing on two residents in particular.
Woo Jae-Hee (Lee Jang-Woo) is an architect, with a long-standing feud between himself and his father, Woo Jung-Hoo (Jung Bo-Suk), the head of a large company. Despite not receiving support from his father, he graduated from university and went on to have success as an architect. It is at a house remodelling site that he meets Lee Bit Chae Woon (Jin Ki-Joo).
Lee Bit Chae Woon works as an interior designer but wishes to become a textile designer but her “responsibilities” as the self-declared head of her family as well as her research for her biological parents hold her back.

#9 Mary Me Now
Park Yoo-Ha (Han Ji-Hye) sacrificed her life and personal interests to become a mother and wife. Now that her life is turned upside down, she decides to go back home and regain her career. The two connect in an unexpected matter, however, the ties that bind them are way more complex than they initially think.
While the two represent a main aspect of the drama, the name or title of the series is actually derived from Park Yoon-Ha’s father’s relationship with a woman he was forced to leave in his youth and now gets the chance to love again. The appearance of his old flame completely changes his life and that of his four children around but also adds a layer of complexity to all of their relationships.

Han Song-Jung (Kim Mi-Sook) is a novelist and a single mother of three daughters – Da-Ae (Hwang Woo Seul Hye), Da-Jung (Park Se-Young) and Da-In (Ko Woo-Ri).
Her dream is for her daughters to be able to find good men to marry and live better life than she had.
Glorious Day follows the story of Han Song-Jung and that of her three daughters as they experience life, love and heartbreak.

There you have it, the best K-dramas that have more than 50 episodes.
As you watch these drams of varying lengths, you will notice many similarities in their format–even if they have different directors/producers and even actors. However, at the end of the day the plot lines and stories are different and they do not feel repetitive. Many of them cover themes such as family, love, self growth but they are all enduring and enjoyable to watch in my opinion at least.
Another mention I would like to make is that the availability of these dramas as mentioned above is based on my experience. You might find some of them on both Viki and Netflix, some just on Viki or just on Netflix and some on neither depending on your region.
I hope you too will find the same entertainment, joy, and pleasure that I experienced while watching these 50+ episode K-Dramas. It was a delight to get to witness the characters grow and develop in an unhurried manner throughout the series.

The story follows Josie, who wakes up on her 36th birthday in the hospital to a strange man claiming to be her husband. In her new life, she has everything she thinks she wants, but there are some drastic changes in people that she’s missing. Meanwhile, there is also a Josie that wakes up in the first world we read about. The story explores what it would be like if you woke up one day and your life was completely different.

In The Love of My Other Life, C.J Connolly explores the question of what would happen if you woke up one day to discover that your life was completely different.
Josie wakes up on her 36th birthday in a hospital to find that she is now married to a man named Rob that she has never met before and that they now live in Manhattan in a swanky place.
She has no recollection of how she got there or what happened to her old life. While doing her best to adapt, Josie must decide whether to stay in this new life or go back to Brooklyn.

Comments & Review of The Love of My Other Life by C.J Connolly
Connolly does an excellent job of world-building, creating two distinct and believable worlds for Josie to inhabit. I found myself equally invested in both plotlines and was eager to see how they would be resolved. Similarly to the author, I also have this fascination with parallel universes and being able to see how a different choice could have changed an entire life path. However, I am sure that so are many of you are fascinated by this unrealizable concept as well which is one of the reasons why I knew that I had to feature the book on this blog.
The idea that we are all living parallel lives is a fascinating one, and Connolly does a great job of exploring the concept. The characters are well-developed and relatable, and the story is engaging and fast-paced. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good read.
The pacing is a bit quirky at times, but you get used to it. It is not something that bothered me, but it is something I picked up on.
I loved the way this book explored not just the idea of parallel universes, but also the idea of what it means to be happy. Josie is faced with a choice: stay in her new life, where she has everything she ever wanted (with the exception of a loved one), or go back to her old life and the people she loves (with the exception of a new loved one). Neither choice is easy as either way Josie loses someone she cares about, but Connolly does a great job of exploring both options.
Despite the initial shock of finding themselves in a different world, a word foreign from their own, both Josies find something worth staying for in the lives they ended up with, so to speak. This makes going back to their old world not as easy as it should have been.
I also loved the way this book explored the idea of soulmates. In Josie’s new life, she is married to a man she has never met before. In her old life, she is seemingly in love with a man she has known for many years but could not get with until the moment she is transported into this whole new world. Both relationships are equally valid (they are despite some of the complications) and Connolly does a great job of exploring the different dynamics at play. However, the idea that no matter what life we are living, or what choices we make that change our path, we can still end up with the one we were always meant to be is a comforting one even if to the logical mind it sounds a bit unrealistic.
Do I recommend this book?
Yes. The Love of My Other Life is a captivating novel that will leave you wondering what could have been. Connolly does an excellent job of world-building and creating relatable characters that will pull you into the story from the very first page. If you’re looking for a book that will transport you to another world, I highly recommend The Love of My Other Life by C.J Connolly.

Itaewon Class is a 2020 South Korean television series starring Park Seo-Joon, Kim Da-mi, and Kown Nara. The series is based on the webtoon of the same name written by Kwang Jin. Itaewon Classis a a story about young people in their 20s overcoming prejudice and discrimination against them, and finding success on their own terms.
Summary of the plot
The series follows the life of Park Saeoriy whose life is turned upside down due to the members of a chaebol family. Following his father’s death, Park Saeoriy ends up imprisoned, a time during which he works to better himself and starts coming up with a plan on how to avenge his father. The k-drama follows his journey from the bottom to the top as he opens up his own restaurant in Itaewon, which quickly becomes a hot spot for the young.
As he begins to find success, he also starts to attract the attention of some of the most powerful people in South Korea. However, Park Saeoriy is not content with just being a successful businessman; he also wants to take down those who have wronged him in the past.
The Itaewon Classk-drama is a story of revenge, friendship, and love. Park Saeoriy’s journey is one that will resonate with many young people who have felt like they are up against the world.
The Characters
Park Saeroiy (played by Park Seo-Joon) – is the main protagonist of the story. He is a high school student who is expelled from his school after punching a bully. This event changes the course of his life and leads him on a path of revenge. However, through his interactions with the people in Itaewon, he slowly starts to heal and build a new life for himself.
Jo Yi Seo (played by Kim Da-mi) – is one of the main female leads. She is a high school student who befriends Park Saeroiy. She is a bright and optimistic person who believes in second chances.
Oh Soo-ah (played by Kown Nara) – is another one of the main female leads. She is an orphan girl that grew up at an orphanage where Saeroiy’s father volunteered his time. She starts to befriend Saeroiy and even begins developing feelings for him, however, her need and desire to find herself a place in this world leads her down a path that Saeroiy cannot follow
Jang Geun-won (played by Ahn Bo-hyun) – is the main antagonist of the story. He is from a wealthy family and is used to getting whatever he wants. When he meets Park Saeroiy, he sees him as an obstacle in his path and does everything in his power to bring him down.
Comments on Itaewon Class
This show does a really great job of depicting real-life issues such as classism, ablism, homophobia, and racism in Korea. The characters are all well-developed and likable. I particularly enjoyed the relationship between the two lead characters, played by Park Seo-Joon and Kim Da-mi. They have great chemistry together and their scenes were very sweet and heartwarming.
Itaewon Class is a show that perfectly captures the zeitgeist of our times. The main character, Park Saeroyi, is an unlikely hero who doesn’t fit into any one box. He’s a high school dropout, an ex-convict, and an orphan. But he’s also incredibly driven, passionate, and resourceful. These qualities are what help him succeed in opening up his own bar, in the Itaewon neighborhood of Seoul.
The show does an excellent job of depicting the struggles and challenges that young entrepreneurs face in today’s society. Park Sae-ro-yi has to deal with obstacles such as ruthless competition, hostile takeover attempts, and malicious rumors. However, he continues to persevere against all odds and fight for what he believes in.
The show also features a diverse cast of characters, which helps to create a more realistic and relatable experience for viewers. In addition to Park Sae-ro-yi, we have Jo Yi Seo (played by Kim Da-mi), Ma Hyeon Yi (played by Lee Joo Young), Kim Toni (played by Chris Lyon) and many more. Each character brings their own unique perspective and background to the table, which helps to create a well-rounded and nuanced view of the world that the show takes place in.
Another thing I would like to mention is that this is Park Seo Joon’s best performance to date. He is not a bad actor, really is not, but his performance in Itaewon Class is on another level. He completely disappears into his role and becomes Park Saeroyi. You forget that he is an actor playing a character and start to believe that he is the character. It is truly amazing to watch.
Overall, I would highly recommend Itaewon Class to anyone looking for a touching, funny, and realistic portrayal of young adults in Korea today. The series tackles important issues in a way that is both entertaining and educational, and it is definitely worth watching!

Today I wanted to share some of my thoughts on the Faking with Benefits book by Lily Gold. This is a book I got to read through Kindle Unlimited, a book that I most likely would not have purchased otherwise if I am being honest, but let’s discuss why that is in the next sections. Before anything else, let’s talk about the basics.
Summary of the plot
Faking with Benefits is a contemporary adult, reverse harem romance novel that explores a young, London-based lingerie designer’s love life or lack thereof.
The main character, Layla, is an up-and-coming lingerie designer who is working hard to get her business off the ground. When she’s not busy with work, she is searching for the ONE, spending time going on dates with whoever swiped right on her online dating profiles. Yes, profile, she has tried them all.
Things are clearly not working out and Layla’s chance of crossing “husband” off her to-do list by the time she turns 30 is diminishing as the days or rather dates go by. Cue, her three friends, and next-door neighbors who are more than happy to help Layla explore the intricacies of dating as well as practice on them.

Comments & Review of Faking with Benefits by Lily Gold
Faking with Benefits by Lily Gold was an interesting read. I liked how the book had a lot of humor in it but also some serious messages as well. I think that the author did a good job of addressing some important topics, such as lying and friendship, as well as showing how bullying can impact a person in a way that was both entertaining and thought-provoking.
More so, despite this book being a Reverse Harem book and consequently quite a spicy book, the writing does not feel cheap. Sure, there are quite a few spicy scenes that are described in detail, but they do not take away from the plot but rather add to it. What I am getting at is that despite the fact that the book may seem like porn on paper based on the genre it fits into, it is way more than that.
While I cannot say that I am obsessed with this book by any means, nor is it a book I wish to remember forever, overall, this is an elegant approach to a Reverse Harem type of book, and it did make me quite interested in reading more from Lily Gold even if the book type itself is not necessarily my cup of tea.
Okay, Reverse Harem does not “do it” for me personally; however, at the same time, I am quite happy to see such topics depicted in books. We have been subjected to men being able to date multiple people at the same time and even marry them in some cultures for what feels like forever; however, it has always been taboo to talk about women doing the same. This rise of these books is truly a step forward for society, and it provides a “voice” to women who want to explore their sexuality in ways that many may not consider socially appropriate and do so without having to hide it.
In terms of characters, I appreciate how the author did not make the main character, Layla, a doormat. She is a strong and independent woman who knows what she wants and is not afraid to go after it. She does have some more work to do for sure, but at the end of the day, she is a relatable character but one with a kink she is not afraid to act upon.
As far as the three male characters are concerned, I feel like each, and every one of them had a lot to offer in general and to Layla in particular. They each provided her with something that she was lacking in her life and helped her to grow as a person, which I thought was excellent. While the men were written very well, my favorite character was easily Josh. He is such a sweetheart, even if he does not want to admit it, and I think he truly cares for Layla. He complemented Layla’s personality beautifully, making for an interesting pair.
Fun fact about Josh. I am unsure whether it was described when the character was first introduced, but I was left with a strong feeling that he was of Asian descent. I imagined him looking a lot like Henry Golding for the entire book for some reason. I do not know what made me think of the Malaysian actor, but that is the image that had formed in my head ever since I first met the character. (I was not entirely wrong… but you will get to discover that by yourself if you read the book).
That does not mean I did not find the rest of the male characters endearing because I totally did. I saw Zach as the perfect best friend material, someone who would stand by Layla and help her let loose as well when needed.
Luke, on the other hand, provided Layla with the stability she needed. He was a great influence on her, and I think she learned a lot from him. One of the things that I admired most about him was his ethics, even though they were frustrating at times. He was a protective man and, at times, even a father figure for Layla. He provided her with something she clearly needed and never truly had in her life.
Overall, I thought this book was quite enjoyable the plot was interesting and kept me engaged throughout the entire book. I will say that I guessed some of the few twists early on; however, it did not make the book any less enjoyable. On the contrary, I think it made me appreciate it more because I could see how well everything fit together.
The author’s writing style is very easy to follow, and the story flows nicely. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a light read that will make you laugh and maybe even cry a little bit. This book is an excellent addition to the genre, and I cannot wait to see what else the author comes up with in the future.
Do I recommend this book?
If you are looking for a fun, easy read with some humor and spice, then this book is definitely for you. If you are not into Reverse Harem books, then I would still recommend giving Faking with Benefits by Lily Gold a try

The world of Korean dramas is a vast and diverse one, but what they all have in common are the stories that keep us hooked. From heart-wrenching tears to deep belly laughs, these shows create worlds we can’t help but get lost in. But why do we love them so much? Let’s find out!
1) The Characters
There’s always an interesting character who faces his or her own unique trials and tribulations while learning about themselves along the way. Whether it’s a spunky school girl with crushes on boys or an ambitious woman struggling to make ends meet as a single mother, there’s someone for everyone to relate to. And you’ll never catch ’em giving up easily! In some cases, you need to look past the crying which can get a bit old after a while, but not all dramas are the same.
2) The Pacing
It’s not always about dramatic scenes; sometimes it’s all about what the characters are saying. And they do say a lot of things worth making a note of. The way these K-dramas address some of the most common themes when it comes to human life is different from how western cultures perceive these things.
But back to the pacing. The idea is that whether a series is filled with dramatic scenes, action-packed, or more talking and lamenting, they always have a hook coming up that will grab your attention. They’ll keep you guessing until the very end with unexpected twists and turns!
3) The Plot
From melodramatic love triangles to comedic misunderstandings, these stories never fail to engage us and give us something to talk about. We can’t wait to find out what will happen next! It should be mentioned that this is mostly the case, but there have been a few dramas that were a tad too boring, but the chances that you will encounter some of them are pretty slim. The plots are mostly well constructed and most often than not do not fail to entertain us and maintain our attention.
4) The Music
Whether it’s a soundtrack from the drama itself or added in as background filler, Korean music is simply beautiful. We can’t help but get up and dance along to the catchy tunes or have a good cry to the more emotional ballads. A word of advice though, some songs will get repeated pretty often which can be a bit much.
5) The Heartbreak
Even with the happy endings, there are plenty of things that can go wrong along the way and leave you crying in despair (or at least wiping away a tear or two). We love how these shows make us feel and how they manage to get you right in the feels! However, if that sort of thing is not your cup of tea, do not worry because there are various genres including action and thriller to enjoy.
6) The Reality
From actual Korean culture to realistic social issues, it’s always interesting to find out more about a country. And of course, we get to see plenty of the beauty of it in these drama series. There’s just something about beautiful cities and everyday life that will never get old and always get us dreaming of another life. However, many series often show the struggles and social issues that are unfortunately quite common in Korea, but also how these issues changed or evolved through time. Caution is advised as after all, the series are just that – TV series and certain elements might be inspired by reality, but they do not necessarily depict true events as they happened.
7) The Witty Dialogue
They’ll have you laughing out loud with some of the things these characters say! The subtle jokes might not always translate directly into English (or they’re just not that funny), but it is fun to try and understand what they mean as you watch along! The remarks and banter are pretty great in some dramas more than others, but it is entertaining nonetheless.
8) The Love
From tender puppy love to steamy romance, these shows are full of cute couples who will find a cozy place in your heart.
Another interesting aspect regarding love is that most people who end up together actually have a deep connection since before they were introduced on the show. Some knew each other since childhood even if they do not recall or even before that if you can believe it! It seems to be a bit of a trend. I wonder whether that is how it goes in real life. Probably not! At least I hope so as otherwise you pretty much lucked out if you have not meant the love of your life while in diapers.
9) The Melodrama
And here we have a very special element that tends to be present in most if not all. It might sound like a bad thing, but this is actually what makes these dramas feel more real and relatable even if they happen to take place in a fictional world. There’s no denying the popularity of the infamous Kdrama sob scenes as the actors and actresses will tug at our heartstrings with their well-executed tears. They can be over the top as sometimes, there are too many of them, but they manage to make us cheer on our favorite couple.
10) The Cuteness
Even with all their strength, these characters are often very adorable when it comes to their significant others. They’ll be affectionate in the most ridiculous ways, but they just can’t help themselves! However, this is another element that makes us go crazy for these lead actors and actresses aka the cute factor which takes our already deep love for them to the next level.
11) The Fashion
From gorgeous wedding dresses to well-chosen corporate suits, you can see just how fashionable Korea is! Whether it’s big cities or small towns, characters are always looking their best with trendy outfits and accessories that may very well be worth more than our first car. We can only dream of looking half as good as they do.
Conclusion
As you can see, there are more than enough good reasons why we love Korean dramas. They make us laugh, they make us cry (most of the time), and they give us all the feels! Truly, there’s something for everyone in the world of Korean dramas. If you’re not already a fan then it’s time you found out what all the hype is about! How do we use Kindle Unlimited?
Both JJ and I have subscribed to this service and we have been enjoying it so far. While I cannot speak for JJ here, I will share my personal experience with the service in the following paragraphs.
My experience with the service has been positive so far. I have yet to encounter any issues aka the service has been working without problems for me and I have been able to access the subscription both on my Kindle device as well as on the Kindle app on my iPhone.
I easily borrowed all the books I was interested in reading and returned them without any problems.
While I did borrow and read books I had on my read list, I also borrowed quite a lot of books I had no clue they even existed. This is where the value lies for me. I followed the recommendations and picked a lot of books that sounded good without going into the details of the plot or even reading about the author. I ended up discovering books I am sure I would have not read otherwise as they would have not shown up on my radar. This is a great way to find new authors and books you will love.
As I mentioned above, I have no complaints about this service so far and more than just that, I actually enjoy using it. For me, it makes total sense to stay subscribed in the long run.
I did a bit of math and just as an example, during August 2022 I read 6 books worth a total of £11.99 had I purchased them in ebook format from Amazon. Instead, I ended up paying just £7.99 aka the subscription fee in the UK. The savings are not a lot obviously, but while I was reading these books I also had some others I could choose from. Had I not found one my selected books interesting, I could have easily picked something else without incurring a loss. Also, had I been in the mood for another type of book instead of the ones I was reading, I could have left that book on my device and started something else for the time being.
Overall, Kindle Unlimited has been a great experience for me so far and I would recommend it to other avid readers. If you’re not sure whether the service is for you, I suggest you try out the free trial first and then decide.

Today I wanted to talk to you about the first ever k-drama I watched. This k-drama introduced me into an entirely new universe that I had no idea existed and it completely captivated me. I’m talking about the k-drama Romance is a Bonus Book.
I was always fascinated with foreign culture, including Korean culture, but k-dramas just never called to me. The fact that JJ does not really enjoy watching them did not help and my family never watched any either while I was growing up so our household never really had any Korean dramas playing in the background.
One day, I stumbled upon Romance is a Bonus Book completely by accident and decided to give it a try. Let’s just say that my life changed forever and any free time I had left basically vanished.
Summary of the plot
Romance is a Bonus Book centers around Cha Eun Ho (Lee Jong Suk), a successful editor at a publishing company, and Kang Dan-i (Lee Na Young), a former copywriter who has been out of the workforce for years. After Dan-i’s husband leaves her for another woman, she finds herself struggling to make ends meet. She eventually takes a job at Eun Ho’s publishing house, but things are far from smooth sailing from there. The fact that the two have a very interesting history together only complicates matters further.
The Characters
Cha Eun Ho (played by Lee Jong Suk) is the chief editor at a publishing company. He’s a bit of a perfectionist, and he’s always striving to be the best at his job.
Kang Dan-i (played by Lee Na Young) is a former copywriter who has been out of the workforce for years. After her husband leaves her for another woman, she finds herself struggling to make ends meet so she is forced to go back to work so that she can take care of her daughter
Comments on Romance is a Bonus Book
I’ve never really been one to follow Korean drama series as I mentioned in the intro, but when I saw the trailer for Romance is a Bonus Book, I was hooked so I decided to give Korean dramas a try.
Romance is a Bonus Book takes place in a modern, contemporary setting and the plot lines are super relatable. The best part though is that the series is centered around books. Besides what promised to be a cute love story, one of the themes of the series are books so that obviously caught my attention straight away. You should know just how much I love books!
There haven’t been many series over the years that focused on books and none quite like this one, as far as I recall. The Korean drama Romance is a Bonus Book even takes place at a publishing company! Unfortunately, this also exposed me to aspects of the publishing industry I wish I had not seen, but also bits and pieces that I was not familiar with. It was interesting to find out something new.
Let’s talk a bit about the plot. I will do my best to keep the spoilers to a minimum.
The protagonist of the story is a divorced, ex-copywriter who dedicated her life to her daughter and husband. After her husband has had enough and was tired of struggling to put food on the table after his business dealings failed, he leaves his wife and family for another woman. As such, Dan-i is forced to return to work in order to take care of herself and keep her daughter in school. However, nothing is ever easy, and going back to work after a long gap is even less so.
We live in a world where ageism is a thing and it seems that this aspect is even more emphasized in Asian culture. When there is so much fresh blood why hire someone who has a family, who has responsibilities, and is considered to not have the same ability to work long hours as someone who just finished school?
Basically, think of The Second Act without J. Lo and in Korea, but unlike J. Lo, Dan-i is forced to accept menial jobs and in the end takes up a position below her level of education.
Mind you, drama is not even the right word to describe the trauma that Dan-i has to endure. It is truly heartbreaking what Dan-i has gone through in order to get her life back on track, however, it is also endearing and empowering.
Something I really enjoy was that the events are presented in a relatable manner rather than making them seem too dramatic.
Despite being willing to do whatever it takes to survive and to ensure that her daughter is able to benefit from a good education, Dan-i ultimate help comes from her childhood best friend who works as an editor-in-chief at a publishing house. Not only does Dan-i learn about an opening within his company, but even before that, she pretended to be the person she hired for him to help around the house while he was at work. Wow, that sounded weird, but here is where the first elements of comedy come in as he did not realize that it was Dan-i who acted as his housekeeper.
I won’t tell you more about the plot as I wouldn’t want to spoil the show for you. What I will leave you with is a few thoughts on some aspects that I found particularly interesting or relatable.
The series itself acts as a reminder that there are books that make us laugh, that bring us joy, but also books that will make us cry, and feel sorrow however all of them regardless of genre take us on an adventure and can also open our eyes and minds to issues that we otherwise would have never been exposed too.
There is a whole universe or rather an infinite number of universes waiting to be discovered in books. The k-drama Romance is a Bonus Book also emphasizes an idea we rarely hear: it is okay to not love a book even though someone else loves it. Just grab another one, both metaphorically and physically.
There will be books we will cherish above all others, books that keep us company throughout the chapters of our lives, and books that gain a different meaning each time we read them. Dan-i is also reminded of this fact and as such, she opens her heart and mind and decides to revisit the book that she cherished the longest, the book that kept her company and kept her warm without hesitation and without expectations whenever she needed.
This time, however, the phrases she highlighted over the years gain a completely different meaning as she finally learns to read between the lines and uncovers all the things she missed. You will definitely make more sense of what I am saying here once you start watching the series.
I also really enjoyed the slow-burn romance between Eun Ho and Dan-i. Their relationship isn’t rushed; instead, it unfolds naturally over time as the two get to know each other better in a different light than before. There are plenty of touching moments between them that left me swooning, but my favorite scene by far is when the two first express their feelings for each other using the work of a famous Japanese writer – Natsume Soseki.
The chemistry between Lee Jong Suk and Lee Na Young is undeniable, and they definitely have great on-screen chemistry together. They play off of each other so well that it’s easy to believe that they could actually be falling in love in real life (even though we know that is not the case).
Another concept that I loved in Romance is a Bonus Book is the idea that not just our own lives are formed by various books – some sad, some happy, some empowering, etc, all of which symbolize the stages of our life, the events we go through, but that people themselves are like a book.
So fall in love with someone who is like a book, a book that brings you warmth, that brings you joy, and one that you can rely on. Fall in love with a book that you look forward to rereading time and time again and one that will continue to surprise you and gain a different meaning each time you open it.
This brings us back to the series title – Romance is a Bonus Book. Romance is not something we absolutely need to experience in our lives (depends on who you are asking…), but it is a bonus that some will be fortunate to find. If you do find it, cherish it.
I am not a writer however I do hope that I managed to give a satisfactory explanation and make the ideas come across as intended. All of the above definitely sounded way better in my head than it did on paper, but please do not let it deter you from enjoying this drama.

The soundtrack is up to par as well with some songs I now have downloaded onto my phone. The artists are incredible and I look forward to exploring more of their work. Another thing I do wish to mention is that the songs fit the story incredibly well and add just a tiny bit more to the whole setting, but are not there to compensate for anything. Think of the songs like the sprinkles on top of a sundae.
The one thing I am sorry about which is by no means anyone’s fault other than my own is potentially missing some of the cultural nuances that I am unfamiliar with. However, for the most part, any such aspects are explained quite well even if not necessarily through words so any viewer regardless of background is able to grasp them. Plus at its core, the k-drama is all about love in its various forms and love is a universal language.
Beyond the beautiful story which I am sure will stay with me for a very long time, Romance is a Bonus Book is also a great way to start immersing yourself in this type of series. I may be biased here, but after watching over 100 series, there is no other k-drama I can think of that would have been a better fit for a “first”, not for me anyway. Had I not started with this one, I am not sure whether I would have watched so many afterward.
This particular story was incredibly retable, light for the most part, or at least presented in a light way if we are going to be accurate here, but also meaningful.
This was an odd discussion, wasn’t it? I haven’t found myself so affected by a series or book in a long time. It came out of nowhere and it all started from watching a cute trailer that more or less popped up in front of my eyes while browsing Netflix.
I am glad that I have spent 16 or so hours watching the Korean drama as it brought up some interesting aspects and questions that I need to consider. Also, watching the series left me with a sense of calm, of joy, as odd as it may sound. Yes, I did end up watching all the episodes and do wish there were more, but I am happy with the time I got to spend with Cha Eun Ho and Kang Dan-i, plus the rest of the characters.
I have no idea whether I managed to successfully convey my thoughts and feelings about the drama, but I hope that I have. I definitely recommend that you give the series a go, if you do not enjoy it, you can always find another one, one that brings you as much joy as Romance is a Bonus Book brought me.

However, things are not as clear-cut as they may seem to their colleagues since the two have actually known each other since they were children, and Eun-ho has been in love with Dan-i for just a long.
Throughout the course of the drama, the two, or rather Dan-i begins to realize the depth of Eun-ho’s feeling and allows herself to fall for him as well as think of herself as a woman rather than just a mother. The drama is light-hearted and fun at times, but it also deals with more serious topics such as unemployment and ageism in the workplace. Overall, it’s a great show that will definitely make you smile.
Although office romances can be tricky, the chemistry between Cha Eun-ho and Kang Dan-i is undeniable. While working together, the two slowly begin to develop feelings for each other. However, things are complicated by the fact that Do Min Ik does not want anyone to know about his prosopagnosia, and Gal Hee is the only one who knows the truth and allowed herself to profit from Min-it’s misfortune for just one moment, after which things snowballed out of control.
This drama is funny and heartwarming and will definitely make you root for the two main characters to end up together. It is series such as this one that makes it hard not to like Kim Young-Kwang dispute any comments he might or might not have made around a decade ago.
#5 Her Private Life
Office romance is always a risky proposition, but sometimes the rewards can be worth the risks. Such is the case with Park Min-young and Kim Jae-Wook’s new K-drama, Her Private Life. The series follows the story of a talented but often frustrating art curator named Sung Deok Mi (Park Min-young), who falls in love with her new boss, Ryan Gold (Kim Jae-Wook). Of course, there are plenty of obstacles in their way, including the fact that Sung Deok Mi is secretly a huge fangirl of a Korean pop idol named Shi An.
Nevertheless, the two manage to find their way to each other, and the result is a touching and often hilarious romance. If you’re looking for a K-drama that will make you laugh, cry, and swoon, then Her Private Life is definitely one you should check out. Plus, this is one of the spiest office-romance k-dramas out there, together with What is Wrong with Secretary Kim, of course.
#6 Hyena
If you’re looking for an office romance-themed k-drama to watch, Hyena is a great option. The story follows two lawyers, Jung Geum Ja and Yoon Hee Jae, as they navigate their complicated relationship. While the two are constantly butting heads with each other, they can’t deny the attraction they feel.
Hyena is a great drama for those who are looking for a mix of romance, comedy, and suspense. Plus, we are really not talking about the same kind of romance as in the other dramas presented in this article. There is way more scheming involved and less melodrama.
#7 She Was Pretty
This drama tells the story of two childhood friends, Kim Hye Jin and Ji Sung Joon, who reconnect as adults. Hye Jin has always tried to hide her curly and unruly hair and skin redness, while Sung Joon has always felt like he was never good enough for her.
However, things change as the years go by, and when Sung Joon wants to meet up again, Hye Jin is the one who is not confident enough to face her childhood friend, thus sending her best friend in her stead to meet him.
This leads to some hilarious misunderstandings between the two. While this drama is classified as a romantic comedy, some touching moments will definitely tug at your heartstrings. Plus one scene I will never be able to get over *huffing in annoyance.

Today we are going to talk a bit about the 2019 Korean movie Parasite or 기생충. There is no denying that we are a bit late to the party, but having been exposed to many Korean works as well as to, well, Korean culture over the past couple of years allowed me to see the movie with different eyes, different than I probably would have seen it when it was first released.
Summary of the plot
Parasite is the story of two different families, the first one being the Park family, who live in a wealthy and luxurious villa, while the second is the Kim family, who live in a cramped basement apartment. The story revolves around how the members of the Kim family end up working for the Park family as their tutors, housekeepers, and chauffeurs.
As the story progresses, we see how the two families’ lives become intertwined in a way that is at first comical but eventually turns tragic.
The Characters
Kim Ki-taek (played by Song Kang-ho) is the head of the Kim family. He lives with his wife, Chung-sook (Jang Hye-jin), and their two children, Ki-woo (Choi Woo-shik) and Ki-jung (Park So-dam). He is a very laid-back person and does not seem to have any aspirations in life. His goal is to make ends meet and keep on living.
Chung-sook is Ki-taek’s wife. She is a housewife and does all the cooking and cleaning for her family. She is less of a pushover than one might expect, but she does follow along with the plans of the rest of the members of her family without expressing many objections.
Ki-woo (played by Choi Woo-shik) is the son of Ki-taek and Chung-sook. He is street-smart and is always looking for ways to make money. As such, he ends up faking a degree from the prestigious Yonsei University in order to get hired as a tutor for the Park’s eldest child.
Ki-jung is the younger child of the Kim family. Just like her brother, she is incredibly smart and resourceful.
The Park family is the polar opposite of the Kim family. They are wealthy, they live in a beautiful villa, and they have all the luxuries that money can buy.
Mr. Park is the head of his own company and is very successful. He is a bit of a control freak and is very demanding of those around him.
Yeon-kyo is Mr. Park’s wife. She is a beautiful woman who seems to have it all. However, she is very naïve and does not seem to be able to think for herself.
Da-song is the Parks’ youngest child. He is a young boy who is full of energy. He has a lot of seemingly imaginary friends.
Da-hye is the Parks’ oldest child. She is a surprisingly shy young woman who is very studious and develops a crush on her tutor, Ki-woo.
So, now that we have a general idea of the plot and the characters, let’s get into whether or not the movie is worth watching.
Comments on Parasite
The movie Parasite was directed by Bong Joon-ho and was released in 2019. It won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, making it the first Korean movie to ever win the prestigious award plus an Academy Award for best film, among other awards. On top of it all, the movie has received rave reviews from many critics.
So, is the movie Parasite worth watching?
In my opinion, yes, it is. The story is compelling, the acting is excellent, and the movie is overall very well-made. However, I will say that it is not a light-hearted movie and that it does deal with some dark themes. If you are
Parasite is a movie that will make you laugh, cry, and think all at the same time. It is a story that is both tragic and comical, with characters that are both lovable and hateable. The acting in the movie is top-notch, with all of the actors giving great performances. The movie is also very well-made, with beautiful cinematography and a great soundtrack.
But most importantly, Parasite is a movie that will make you think. It will make you question your own privilege, and it will also make you think about the class system in our society. It is a movie that is relevant and timely, and it is one that I highly recommend watching. Honestly, this is perhaps the reason why it received so many awards and rave reviews. However, depending on how familiar the viewer is with the Korean culture and society, some aspects of the movie might be lost in translation. I am by no means an expert, but having been exposed more to this culture in the past couple of years through films and also through people helped me tremendously in understanding the movie Parasite on a much deeper level. At the end of the day though, the themes depicted in the film are universal even if some of the nuances are particular to a certain culture or society.
Ultimately, I believe that the movie Parasite is definitely worth watching. Even if certain aspects may get lost in translation, I think it is still a very powerful movie that will leave you with a lot to think about.
So, if you are looking for a light-hearted movie, then Parasite is not the movie for you. But if you are looking for a thought-provoking and moving story, then I highly recommend watching the movie Parasite. It is an excellent movie that is sure to leave a lasting impression on those who watch it.

If you are a fan of K-pop and K-drama, I am sure that at some point, you wished you could purchase some of the many Korean magazines featuring your favorite idols or actors. If that is the case, rest assured that you are not the only one.
However, finding such magazines outside Korea, particularly in Europe or the Americas, is not as easy as you probably already find out. There are options, though few options, but there are some for which I am super grateful. I cannot rely on the generosity of friends or family forever, so in my quest to find a local retailer, I bumped into Nolae.

Sometimes delivery is free for first-time customers (depending on the offers running at that time), other times, you need to spend €100 or €120 to qualify for free delivery.
The delivery is super fast (after shipping), and from my experience, parcels are being sent out via DHL. This is a great shipping option for most people as DHL has to be one of the most reliable courier services in Europe if not the world.
I did mention above that delivery is fast, but it takes some time for the retailer to process your order and for them to ship it out. The reason for this is the fact that procure the products from South Korea so it takes a while for them to reach Germany. You do need some patience, but it is so worth it!

Nolae is based in Germany, so as long as you are also located in the EU, there shouldn’t be any customs fees. If you are outside of the EU, there might be some import taxes or duties that need to be paid, but that really varies from country to country.

The only “negative” thing I can say about the products sold by Nolae is that they are not always the cheapest. For the longest time, I was quite reluctant to invest in a Kindle device. Yes, I could have read many of the same books on a Kindle app on my phone or tablet, however, my phone is rather old now and the battery does not last me as long as it used to. My current iPad is heavier or seems heavier than it did (previous edition) when I was on a reading bender nearly a decade ago. I find it too difficult to hold when reading for longer periods of time. That and the fact that I have been experiencing some eyesight problems that go beyond just having to wear spectacles.
So yes for me Kindle was the obvious choice. The screen size is just perfect, the weight is also rather better than that of my phone, and the technology that Kindle devices use is somewhat gentler on my eyes.
However, I do get that many other people can get by without one. I have done well without one in the past and never had any reason to complain. Things changed obviously and even though I was reluctant to grab a Kindle especially since I missed out on any potential deals at the time I purchased mine, I have no regrets. It took me a couple of days until I got used to using it and fully committed to not returning it, but it was the best decision I could have made.
What do I love about my Kindle?
I think the main thing I love about my Kindle is that it is just so darn convenient. I can carry around a virtually endless supply of books with me wherever I go and I don’t have to worry about them taking up too much space or weighing me down.
While similar results could be obtained with a phone, as I mentioned above, the technology used in the screens of the Kindle devices is so much better for long-term reading and it doesn’t put as much strain on my eyes.
I also love how I can just buy books whenever I want and have them delivered straight to my device within seconds. No more having to go to the store or wait for books to be delivered by post. Now, if I really end up loving a book, I can then buy it in paperback to include it in my physical collection, but I can avoid spending (more) money on books I might have not enjoyed and that would only end up taking up space in my bookcase.
Additionally, Kindle devices come with a lot of great features that make reading even more enjoyable. For example, you can highlight passages, look up words, and take notes.
There are also a ton of great free books available on the Kindle store which is awesome for people who love to read but don’t have a lot of money to spare. Plus, there is the advantage of the Kindle Unlimited subscription service which I talked about in more detail here.
Overall, I highly recommend getting a Kindle even if you love reading physical books. You can still indulge in this passion but perhaps become more selective with the books you do end up picking up in physical format. Let’s not beat around the bush – there are tons of books out there and some aren’t really worth owning in physical format. I know that a lot of work goes into producing a book from the writing to editing to actual publishing and those people also need to get paid for the hard work, however, we as readers also work hard for our money and we should be more mindful of how we spend it.
I think the Kindle is a great device that allows us to do just that – read more books without spending too much money and without having to lug around a bunch of heavy physical books everywhere we go.
What is the lifespan of a Kindle device?
This is a rather difficult question to answer as it depends on a number of factors such as how often you use it, how well you take care of it, etc. However, in general, a Kindle device should last you a good few years before you start having any major issues with it.
Of course, as with any piece of technology, there will always be the odd problem here and there but as long as you take care of your device and don’t drop it or anything then it should serve you well for a good few years.
While no one can truly give you a number, you should expect the device to last you around 5-6 years. Again, it really depends on a lot of factors, but the device should last you a good while.
How long does a Kindle last between charges?
In terms of the battery, most Kindle devices will last for around 6-8 weeks on a single charge which is pretty impressive. Obviously, this will depend on how often you use your device and what features you use most but it’s still a good general rule of thumb.
How to choose a Kindle device?
There are a few different types of Kindle devices available on the market. The most popular ones are the Kindle Paperwhite and the Kindle Voyage.
The main difference between the two devices is that the Paperwhite has a plastic screen and that the Voyage has a glass screen. Despite this difference, the Paperweight is slightly heavier and larger in size than the Voyage. Both devices now have a screen that is flush to the device which is great. This is one chnage is what solved one of the major annoyances of this device.
Anothr think to consider is whetehr youa re willing to have ads running when the device is in lock screen. You do have to pay an extra fee if you choose to go for a device without ads, but it might just be worthy.
