What is Kindle Unlimited?

Kindle Unlimited is a monthly subscription service from Amazon that gives users access to a large library of e-books, audiobooks, and magazines. With Kindle Unlimited, you can read as much as you want, with no limits or restrictions.

What’s included with Kindle Unlimited?

Kindle Unlimited includes a rotating selection of over one million titles, including bestsellers, classics, and new releases. There are also thousands of audiobooks available through the service. And if you have a Kindle Fire tablet, you’ll also have access to a selection of popular magazines.

What kind of books can you find on Kindle Unlimited? 

Literally any type of book you can think of! With over one million titles available, there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re into romance novels, biographies, self-help books, or even cookbooks, you’ll be able to find something to read with Kindle Unlimited.

The best part is that you can find books that would have cost you quite a pretty amount to purchase either in e-book format or even more in paperback or hardback. And once you’re done reading them, you can simply return them and borrow something else. 

How does Kindle Unlimited work?

Kindle Unlimited works with any Kindle device or the Kindle reading app. Just sign up for the service and start borrowing books. You can keep up to 20 titles at a time(at least in the UK), and there are no due dates, so you can keep them as long as you want.

However, the fact remains you cannot keep the books forever. After borrowing 20 books you need to start returning some of them if you want to keep borrowing more. There are no deadlines or anything, but if you want to take full advantage of the subscription, you need to be flexible about returning the books. 

If you decide you want to keep one book forever, it would be cheaper to purchase it than to keep on paying for the subscription especially if there will be moments when you don’t have time to keep up with your reading. 

How much does Kindle Unlimited cost?

Kindle Unlimited costs $9.99 per month, and there’s no commitment required – you can cancel at any time. For the UK, the subscription is priced at £7.99.

What are the drawbacks of getting a Kindle Unlimited subscription?

The biggest drawback is that not all books are available through Kindle Unlimited. So, if there’s a particular book you’re dying to read, you may not be able to find it through the service. 

In addition, while the selection of audiobooks is growing, it’s still not as comprehensive as what you’ll find on Audible. 

There is also the fact that you can not keep the books forever, not unless you want to keep on paying and you are restricted to 20 books at a time. 

And finally, if you’re not an avid reader, or you don’t read often, then Kindle Unlimited probably isn’t worth the money.

Is Kindle Unlimited worth it?

And if you take advantage of the audiobooks and magazines included with the service, it could be even more worthwhile.

Bottom line: Kindle Unlimited is a great way to save money if you read frequently, but it may not be worth it if you don’t read that often.

How do we use Kindle Unlimited? 

Both JJ and I have subscribed to this service and we have been enjoying it so far. While I cannot speak for JJ here, I will share my personal experience with the service in the following paragraphs. 

My experience with the service has been positive so far. I have yet to encounter any issues aka the service has been working without problems for me and I have been able to access the subscription both on my Kindle device as well as on the Kindle app on my iPhone. 

I easily borrowed all the books I was interested in reading and returned them without any problems. 

While I did borrow and read books I had on my read list, I also borrowed quite a lot of books I had no clue they even existed. This is where the value lies for me. I followed the recommendations and picked a lot of books that sounded good without going into the details of the plot or even reading about the author. I ended up discovering books I am sure I would have not read otherwise as they would have not shown up on my radar. This is a great way to find new authors and books you will love. 

As I mentioned above, I have no complaints about this service so far and more than just that, I actually enjoy using it. For me, it makes total sense to stay subscribed in the long run. 

I did a bit of math and just as an example, during August 2022 I read 6 books worth a total of £11.99 had I purchased them in ebook format from Amazon. Instead, I ended up paying just £7.99 aka the subscription fee in the UK. The savings are not a lot obviously, but while I was reading these books I also had some others I could choose from. Had I not found one my selected books interesting, I could have easily picked something else without incurring a loss. Also, had I been in the mood for another type of book instead of the ones I was reading, I could have left that book on my device and started something else for the time being. 

Overall, Kindle Unlimited has been a great experience for me so far and I would recommend it to other avid readers. If you’re not sure whether the service is for you, I suggest you try out the free trial first and then decide.
